The Best Things to Do in Durango, Colorado (Beyond the Ski Slopes)

Durango doesn’t need a ski season to justify a visit. This southwest Colorado town sits at the edge of the San Juan Mountains with a river running through its Victorian-era downtown, and there’s genuinely more to do here than any one trip can cover. Whether you’re staying for a long weekend or a full week at one of our Casa Durango properties, here’s where to spend your time.

Get Out on the Animas River

The Animas River is the spine of Durango, and it’s best experienced on the water. Raft it in summer when flows are high, or paddle a quieter stretch by kayak. The river trail running alongside it makes for an easy morning run or a lazy afternoon walk — you’ll be surprised how quickly downtown disappears behind you.

Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

This is one of those experiences that sounds touristy but genuinely earns its reputation. The coal-fired steam train climbs through the Animas River Gorge on a route that hasn’t changed since 1882. Book the full round-trip to Silverton if you have the day — the mountain town at the top is worth exploring before the return journey.

Hike the Colorado Trail

The Colorado Trail technically starts (or ends) just outside Durango, and even a short section rewards with jaw-dropping views. The Junction Creek trailhead is accessible from town and gets you into the high country without a long drive. Go early in summer before afternoon thunderstorms roll in.

Explore Purgatory Resort Off-Season

Just 25 miles north of Durango, Purgatory runs mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides once the snow melts. It’s quieter than Telluride, the trails are well-maintained, and the views from the top are worth every pedal stroke.

Walk Main Avenue at Your Own Pace

Durango’s downtown is genuinely walkable. You’ll find independent bookshops, craft breweries, galleries, and some of the best green chile in Colorado all within a few blocks. Give yourself a slow morning here — it’s one of those towns that rewards wandering.
