Frida’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

Frida’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina is a cheerful, colourful spot on North Main Avenue, just a short drive from the historic downtown. It’s a bright tribute to Frida Kahlo, with bold colours and pictures of the artist on the walls, and a warm, family-friendly welcome that makes it easy to settle in.

The kitchen serves traditional Mexican recipes made with fresh ingredients. Favourites include mole enchiladas, spicy camarones a la diabla, sizzling fajitas, homemade tamales and an à la carte street taco menu that’s perfect for trying a bit of everything. Their signature dish is the Chile Relleno Nogada, a poblano pepper filled with ground beef, walnuts and fruit, topped with pomegranate seeds.

The cantina side is just as much of a draw. Expect well-made margaritas, classic cocktails, Mexican beers and a good tequila list, and guests often recommend the jalapeño margarita. On a sunny day, the patio and small outdoor bar are the places to be.

Frida’s opens daily from 11am for lunch and dinner. It’s popular with groups and can get busy in the evenings, so going a little early is a good idea. If the front car park is full, there’s usually space in the overflow lot behind the restaurant.
