Rice Monkeys is a small, locally owned Asian fusion bistro tucked into a corner spot on Main Avenue in downtown Durango. Since opening in 2012 it has become a long-standing favourite for sushi in town. The food brings together Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai influences, and the idea is simple: fresh, healthy, creative food, served quickly and with a smile.
The menu splits into “Rolls” and “Bowls”. On the sushi side, try the Funky Monkey Roll or the Southwestern Roll, or keep it simple with sashimi and nigiri, where the beautifully sliced fish really shines. If you’d prefer something warming, there’s beef or ginger chicken phở, plus rice and noodle bowls such as grilled lemongrass beef and Saigon noodles. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners are well looked after too.
It’s a cosy room with only around 20 seats, and the friendly team always seems to be busy with dine-in guests and a steady stream of takeaway orders.
Rice Monkeys serves lunch and dinner and closes for a break mid-afternoon. Dinner can get busy, so arrive close to opening if you’d like a table. Alternatively, order online and take it back to settle in for a relaxed night at home.
