Raft the Animas River

The Animas River flows right through the heart of Durango, and a rafting trip on it is one of the best ways to experience the town. The much-loved “Town Run” is one of the most easily reached stretches of whitewater in Colorado. It carries you past the edge of downtown with green hills and mountain views rising all around.

Expect a fun mix of splashy Class II rapids and calmer, easy-going stretches. The highlight is Smelter Rapid, a lively Class III that always gets a cheer. There’s even a permanent whitewater course built into the river alongside town. Guided trips run from a quick quarter-day splash to a full day on the water, so it’s easy to find one that suits first-timers, families and more adventurous paddlers.

Local outfitters such as Mild to Wild Rafting, Durango Rivertrippers and 4 Corners Riversports provide the raft, paddles, helmets and life jackets, plus wetsuits when the water is cold. Wear quick-dry clothing and sandals with a back strap, bring sunscreen, and leave the cotton at home.

The season runs from May to September. Late May and June bring the biggest, most exciting water from the mountain snowmelt. July and August are warmer and gentler, which is perfect for younger rafters. Book ahead in the summer months, then settle in for a day you’ll talk about all trip.
