If you fancy an easy leg-stretcher without a long drive, the Spur Line Trails are a lovely little find on the south-east side of Durango. Tucked into the Three Springs neighbourhood, this network of gentle singletrack was built with Trails 2000 as an introduction to mountain biking, which makes it just as welcoming on foot.
Expect around five miles of mellow, flowing trail through open grassland, scrub oak and small gullies, with wide views of the surrounding hills. The climbs are gentle, so it suits families, beginner riders and anyone after a relaxed morning out. There’s also a small pump track by the trailhead for little ones on bikes.
Park at the Wilson Gulch Drive trailhead, reached via US-160 East and Three Springs Boulevard. The trails are shared with mountain bikers, so keep your ears open and step aside when riders pass. It’s mostly exposed with little shade, so bring water, sunscreen and a hat, and keep dogs on a lead.
Spring and autumn are a real favourite here, when the air is cool and the light is soft. Summer mornings are lovely too, before the heat builds. Give it a miss straight after rain or snow, as the trail gets muddy. Then head home, settle in and plan tomorrow’s adventure.
Trail conditions can change quickly in the mountains, always check current conditions before heading out.
