Alien Run

For a day trip with a difference, head about 45 minutes south into New Mexico to Hart Canyon, just north-east of Aztec. Alien Run takes its name from a rumoured 1948 UFO crash on the mesa here, and a small plaque marks the spot along the trail. It’s quirky, fun and surprisingly beautiful.

It’s first and foremost a mountain-bike trail system, with three loops covering around 16 miles, but hikers are welcome too. Expect rolling high desert, piñon and juniper, sandstone slickrock and canyon-rim views, with the snowy La Plata Mountains on the horizon. The main loop is around 9 to 10 miles, so many walkers simply enjoy an out-and-back.

From Aztec, drive north on US 550 for about four miles and turn onto County Road 2770, then follow gravel and dirt roads to the trailhead. There’s no fee, plus a vault toilet and shaded picnic tables, but no water. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Watch for bikes and gas-field trucks on the roads.

Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures. Summer can be hot, and the dirt roads get rough after rain or snow. Pack plenty of water, then pair your walk with lunch in Aztec to experience the Four Corners your way.

Trail conditions can change quickly in the mountains, always check current conditions before heading out.
