The Animas River Trail

The Animas River Trail is the backbone of Durango’s trail network, a paved, shared-use path that follows the Animas River right through the heart of town. It runs for around seven miles along the city’s river greenway and has since been extended north to Oxbow Park and Preserve, crossing a string of bridges and underpasses so you rarely need to cross a road.

The smooth concrete and asphalt surface suits just about everyone: an easy stroll, a morning run, a family bike ride or a gentle e-bike cruise. Along the way you’ll find parks, picnic spots, public art and easy links to downtown, the library and the rec centre.

Handy places to hop on include Santa Rita Park, Schneider Park, Memorial Park, Rotary Park and the Durango Community Recreation Center on Main Avenue. The trail also gives easy river access for fishing, rafting and kayaking. Dogs are welcome, but keep them on a lead.

The trail is used all year round, though shady stretches can be icy in winter and some sections are being upgraded, so expect the odd detour. Grab a coffee, pick a stretch and settle in for an easy wander along the river.

Check current Colorado Parks & Wildlife rules and access requirements before visiting.
