Some of the loveliest days around Durango are spent by the water, and four very different lakes sit within an easy drive of town. Vallecito Reservoir, around 18 miles north-east, is the big one: a mountain lake at about 7,800 feet where motorboats, kayaks and anglers share the water, with a marina for rentals and several Forest Service campgrounds along the shore.
Closer to town, Lemon Reservoir sits up Florida Road, roughly 16 miles out. It’s quieter, with trout and kokanee salmon, a ramp for non-motorised boats only and a small first-come, first-served campground at Miller Creek.
Heading north on US 550, Haviland Lake is a calm, wakeless lake beneath the Hermosa Cliffs, a favourite for paddleboards, canoes and a lazy afternoon of fishing, with a campground on the shore. Nearby Electra Lake is a different story: it’s managed by the private Electra Sporting Club and opens to the public for day use only in summer, with gate fees, separate fishing and boat passes and a mandatory boat inspection.
Summer is the main season, and boat and fishing rules vary from lake to lake, so check before you load up the car. Then pick your favourite, settle in by the shore and experience Durango your way.
