Pastorius Reservoir is a quiet little spot on the open mesa south-east of Durango, and one that plenty of people drive straight past. Managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife as a State Wildlife Area, it covers around 80 acres at roughly 6,850 feet, and it’s only a short drive from town.
To get there, head south-east on US 160 for about seven miles, turn south onto Highway 172 for two miles, then go west on County Road 302 for half a mile. You’ll find a boat ramp and restrooms, and plenty of room for a relaxed picnic by the water.
It’s mainly a place for fishing and wildlife watching. The shallow water draws ducks and other birds, making it a favourite with birdwatchers, and anglers come for its stocked fishery. Only boats powered by hand, wind or electric motor are allowed, so it’s ideal for a kayak or float tube. Dogs must be kept on a lead, and waterfowl hunting takes place here in season.
Everyone aged 16 or over needs a valid Colorado hunting or fishing licence or a State Wildlife Area pass to visit, so sort that out before you go. Then pack a picnic, settle in and experience Durango your way.
Check current Colorado Parks & Wildlife rules and access requirements before visiting.
