Maria’s Bookshop

Maria’s Bookshop has been part of Main Avenue for decades, and it’s one of our favourite places to while away an hour downtown. You’ll find it in a historic brick building in the 900 block, with a striped awning, big windows and shelves that glow warmly once the evening lights come on.

Inside, more than 40,000 hand-picked books fill custom wooden shelves, while local artwork hangs beside antique skis, snowshoes and bicycles on the original brick walls. The shop takes its name from Maria Martinez, the celebrated San Ildefonso Pueblo potter, and it’s family-run, with Evan Schertz, who grew up among the shelves, now at the helm.

The staff picks are well worth a browse, and you’ll also find audiobooks and bookish gifts. Maria’s hosts a lively programme of events too, from local authors to national bestsellers, so have a look at what’s on during your stay.

Maria’s opens daily from 9am and stays open into the evening, which makes it perfect for a relaxed browse after dinner on Main. Pick up a new read for the porch, then settle in and experience Durango your way.
