Two of our favourite easy day trips from Durango head in completely different directions, and each shows a different side of the Four Corners. Go west for ancient history among the canyons and mesas, or north over the mountains to a colourful old mining town.
Canyons of the Ancients National Monument lies beyond Cortez, around an hour and a quarter from Durango, and protects one of the densest concentrations of archaeological sites in the country. Start at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum near Dolores, where exhibits bring Ancestral Puebloan life to life and a short trail climbs to Escalante Pueblo. With more time, visit Lowry Pueblo and its great kiva, or walk the Sand Canyon Trail past cliffside ruins.
Silverton is about 48 miles north on US 550, a spectacular drive over Coal Bank and Molas passes. Wrapped by the San Juan peaks at over 9,000 feet, the old mining town is a National Historic Landmark district, with brightly painted buildings, the storied Blair Street and mine tours to explore. You can also pair it with the Durango & Silverton train, travelling one way by rail and the other by coach.
Spring and autumn are lovely for the canyons, while Silverton shines from summer into the golden aspen season. Pack water and layers, check road conditions over the passes, then settle in back home after a big day out.
