For an easy, low-cost morning with kids, we love pairing the Durango Fish Hatchery with the Durango Public Library. Both sit beside the Animas River Trail on the north side of downtown, just a short stroll apart, with the hatchery on E 16th Street and the library on E 3rd Avenue.
Run by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the hatchery dates back to 1903 and is the oldest state-owned hatchery in Colorado. It raises rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout, and children love watching the fish dart about. Bring a few quarters for the fish-food dispensers, as there’s no one on hand to give change.
Afterwards, wander along the trail to the library, a bright, modern building with the hills rising behind it. It’s free to pop in, and the children’s area runs a lively programme, from storytimes for little ones to LEGO sessions for older kids, so check the events calendar during your stay.
The hatchery is usually open daily from 8am to 4pm, and the library opens Monday to Saturday. Construction is under way at the hatchery, so parking is off-site for now and the wildlife museum is closed, so check before you go, then settle in and experience Durango your way.
