East by Southwest has been one of Durango’s best-loved restaurants since it opened in 2002. Chef Sergio Verduzco’s kitchen takes traditional Japanese flavours and ingredients and gives them a contemporary twist. You’ll find it on East College Drive, just a short stroll from Main Avenue.
Sushi and sashimi are the stars here, made with fresh, sustainably sourced seafood. There are inventive rolls such as the High Roller and the Jalapenito, and cooked plates like the Butter Fish Miso Yaki. Beyond the sushi bar, the menu also includes American Kobe beef, Black Angus and organic poultry, with good vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options too.
The dining room is modern and buzzy, with art on the walls and a small waterfall. It’s a lively spot for date night or a catch-up with friends. The bar is known for its well-made cocktails and a good selection of sake.
Happy hour is a real local favourite, with tempting prices on small plates and cocktails, so arrive early if you’d like a seat. For dinner, especially at weekends and in the busy summer months, we recommend booking ahead through OpenTable or giving them a call.
