Horse Gulch

Ask any Durango rider where to go for a quick spin and chances are they’ll say Horse Gulch. This much-loved trail network starts just over a mile from downtown, with around 60 miles of natural-surface singletrack winding through piñon, juniper and scrub-oak hills. It’s the perfect way to experience Durango your way on two wheels, whether you’ve got an hour or a whole afternoon.

There’s something for every level. Horse Gulch Road is a steady, non-technical climb that gets you into the heart of the system, and the Meadow Loop is an easy warm-up with big open views. Stronger riders head for Telegraph, Sidewinder and Mike’s Trails, and the descent on Send It (formerly Anasazi Descent) opens with steep, rocky moves before flowing out through the scrub oak.

The trailhead is on East 3rd Street on the east side of town, and there’s no fee. The trails are shared with hikers, runners and dog walkers, so ride friendly and give a cheerful call when passing. Shade is limited, so carry plenty of water.

Spring and autumn are prime riding seasons, and summer mornings are lovely before the heat builds. Some trails close from 1 December to mid-April for wintering wildlife, so check what’s open before you roll out.

Trail conditions can change quickly in the mountains, always check current conditions before heading out.
