Junction Creek Trail

Few hikes near town come with a story quite like this one. Junction Creek Trail is the very start (or finish) of the Colorado Trail, the famous 567-mile route between Denver and Durango. You can set foot on it just a short drive from downtown and experience Durango your way, whether that’s a gentle creekside stroll or a proper climb.

The first couple of miles follow Junction Creek through a leafy canyon, with shallow pools that little ones love in summer. At around 2.5 miles, a wooden footbridge makes a natural turnaround point. Beyond it, the trail climbs through switchbacks to Gudy’s Rest, a lovely lookout with views back towards Durango.

From Main Avenue, head west on 25th Street, which becomes Junction Creek Road. The trailhead sits on the left just after the road turns to dirt, about 3.5 miles out. Parking is limited, so arrive early. The trail is shared with mountain bikers and horses, and water is scarce once you leave the creek, so carry plenty. Watch out for poison ivy near the water.

Late spring through autumn is the sweet spot. Summer brings cool creek pools, while autumn turns the canyon golden. Snowshoers and fat bikers enjoy it in winter too. Pack a picnic for the footbridge, then settle in back home with tired, happy legs.

Trail conditions can change quickly in the mountains, always check current conditions before heading out.
