Lake Nighthorse

Lake Nighthorse is Durango’s favourite spot for a day on the water, a sparkling reservoir tucked into the hills just south-west of town. The recreation area is run by City of Durango Parks and Recreation in partnership with the Bureau of Reclamation, with the entrance at 1795 County Road 210.

There’s plenty to keep everyone happy: a swim beach (lifeguarded in high summer), paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing, sailing, a floating Wibit aqua park, fishing and motor boating. Rentals are available on site, and anglers aged 16 and over need a Colorado fishing licence.

Entry is by day pass, charged per vehicle, with cheaper walk-in and bike-in passes plus punch and season passes for regulars. All boats, apart from hand-launched paddle craft, must pass a mandatory aquatic nuisance species inspection before launching. Dogs are welcome on a lead but aren’t allowed on the swim beach or at the Wibit.

The lake opens in spring, runs daily through the summer and closes in autumn, with hours changing through the season. Check the city’s website before you go, then pack a picnic and settle in for a lazy lake day.

Check current Colorado Parks & Wildlife rules and access requirements before visiting.
